# Reducing MES Calls When Resolving Resource Hierarchies

I am building an ISA-95 tree and I am facing a problem, how can I know all my parent resources and grandparents and so on and so forth.

Can you suggest an API that has this information. Thanks!

While working on the ISA-95 hierarchy resolution for Resources, I came across a useful MES system endpoint that can simplify how we retrieve the Resource hierarchy: `GetAscendentResources`.

## The problem

When we start with a Resource and need to determine its position in the ISA-95 hierarchy, we may need information about its parent Resources.

Production Line → ProcessResource

Without a way to retrieve the hierarchy directly, we would need to make multiple calls to MES, retrieving one parent at a time until we reach the top of the hierarchy.

This becomes particularly inefficient when the hierarchy contains several levels or when multiple Resources need to be resolved.

**The solution** : `GetAscendentResources`

While investigating the available MES system endpoints, I found the `GetAscendentResources` endpoint.

Instead of retrieving each parent Resource individually, this endpoint allows us to retrieve the Resource’s ascendant hierarchy in a single call.

This allows the hierarchy resolution logic to identify the relevant Production Line and Work Cell without repeatedly querying MES.

## **Takeaway**

When working with Resource hierarchies, it is worth checking whether there is already a system endpoint that provides the hierarchy information you need.

In this case, `GetAscendentResources` can replace multiple parent-navigation calls with a single MES call, making the hierarchy resolution simpler and more efficient.

If you need to retrieve the complete Resource hierarchy, `GetAscendentResources` is definitely an endpoint worth knowing about.
