Function of [Assembly Step] field of a BOM item | Validation of components | Simplification of the Assembly Wizard | Sequential Assembly

Hi, I would like to understand the function of the [Assemble Material] field when managing a BOM item. Does anything change in a step if the Assembly Step and Source Step are different? I couldn’t find an explanation in CM’s help.

What I would like to do for a manual explicit assembly - My requirement for a guided / sequential assembly:

When having the complete BOM I would like to see only “critical” components the operator needs to assemble to the main material in a specific step. This is to validate that the right component was picked according to the BOM. When the operator clicks “Assemble” in the Step View he / she needs to scan first the first material code (product code), confirm, scan the second, confirm and so one, but only for the “critical” components. Just like a Checklist offers a sequence to maintain to fulfill the assembly.

There is also the [Reference] field, but this would still display non-critical items.

Is there such a solution and could this be solved with the fields I mentioned.

Summary:

  1. Validate only “critical” components

  2. Have an assembly sequence / order to be followed when assembling eg. first component is preselected - First BOM item is always preselected - Operator scann material code - CM validates if this is the right material according to the BOM - Click “Next” - Next BOM item is selected - … - Click on Assemble completes this process = Operator can’t choose the BOM item but is guided through the process.

  3. Further can I skip the first screen of the Assemble Material wizard as a one-piece flow is maintained so that always only one piece at a time is assembled anyway

Hello Philipp,

Currently, the Assemble wizard will list all the BOM Items, including the ones marked as references.

For your specific scenario, I would strongly suggest that you check the integrated Checklist with Assembly that was released with 10.2. You can have a checklist and ask the user to consume Materials according to specific BOM Items in specific Checklist Items. In this case, you can ignore complete the Is Reference BOM Items.

Best Regards,

João

Thanks that’s very helpful. I didn’t know that the checklist hast this BOM capabilities. I will try this out.
