This question was raised sometime ago and I am not sure what version you were using.
However, in the most recent versions the Format is supposed to work with jsonata expressions (JSONata Documentation · JSONata).
You can find a bit more information in the Help Portal.
When using the system there is also some formatting tips to help you build the expression check this section within the tutorial linked previously.
